The Pahoa Aquatic Center is tentatively scheduled to re-open Aug. 26 after undergoing a $1.55 million improvement project that began in January.

The project was initially expected to be complete by late July.

Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Department noted in a press release that bonding of “metallic pool accessories” around the pool’s edge needs to be improved before it can be opened, contributing to the delay.

Work had also previously been slowed due to issues over the terms of the contract with Isemoto Contracting Co. and minor weather delays.

The project has included the installation of solar water heating panels, relocation of pumps, repairing leaks, an expanded equipment building, and various other changes to improve the efficiency of equipment.

While the pool is closed, Parks and Recreation staff are also addressing miscellaneous maintenance needs and repair issues that were not part of the project.

New operating hours will take effect once the pool is reopened.

Weekday hours will be 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The pool will be open weekends from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Novice Swim Team registration will be held from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28.

A water aerobics class starts at 9 a.m. Sept. 4.
